Hibbing, the town that moved...
|
 |
The town that moved: moving under way in Hibbing c1921.
Thanks to the Hibbing Historical Society for permission to use this photo.
In the 1920s Hibbing became ‘the town that moved’ when iron ore was found under the town centre, so that the entire community moved, taking most of its 200 or so buildings with it two miles south.
In Bob Dylan’s words,
“A train line cuts the ground
showin’ where the fathers an’ mothers of me an’ my friends
had picked up an’ moved from
north Hibbing
t’south Hibbing “,
-from ' 4 Outlined Epitaths' -the poem on the sleeve of "The Times They Are A-Changin' " album.
There is a very interesting video about the Hibbing move, and about opposition to it by many of the town's people, on YouTube: search for "Hibbing: the little town that stood".
