Swinton and Pendlebury Local History Society |
Welcome to Swinton & Pendlebury Local History Society
|
 |
The Society was formed in March 2000 after a series of reminiscence sessions at Swinton Library which were set up by Ann Monaghan of the Life Times Office. These proved highly popular and, as there was quite a lot of local history in danger of being lost, it was decided to form a local history society to collect, preserve and perpetuate memories, and photographs etc for the benefit of future generations.
We meet at Swinton Library Lancastrians Hall at 10.00am every second Monday (bank holidays excepted) from September to June. Visitors are most welcome and the current charge is £1 for reminiscence sessions and £2 when we have a speaker. The charge includes a welcoming cup of tea and biscuit.
Lancastrians Hall is easy to find opposite the Town Hall at the corner of Chorley Rd and Station Rd (see map on "How to find us" page). There are large car parks to the rear of the hall and shopping centre and bus stops just outside.
Our meetings are varied and interesting alternating between reminiscence sessions on many different subjects, and talks given by a variety of speakers with topics which have ranged from "A History of Chocolate" to "Humour in the Police". See our programme page for details of this years speakers and events.
We also organise walks, coach trips and visits to places of interest.
Why not come along one Monday morning; there's always something of interest going on and everyone is most welcome.
If you're visiting this web site from some exotic foreign place like Australia, South Africa, America, New Zealand or even Farnworth, Wigan or Manchester. If you are from the area or just interested in it, please get in touch with us we will answer any local queries we are able to and if we don't know the answer we will endeavour to find it for you.
If you have any local stories, memories, photos or anything you think may be of interest let us know and we would be delighted to add these to our growing collection.
