Eccles Local History.
Convenor; Margaret Carr 0161 789 5269

The group has continued to work as a self help research group, and there are nineteen members at present. Everyone is involved in the fortnightly meetings, either through typing, photocopying, setting up a web-site on the internet, or presenting their own research to the group, and helping to man the stall at the annual Salford Local History Fair at Peel Park.

Over the years the group has been on several excursions. These include visits to Temple Newsom Leeds, Leeds University Word War One Museum, Bramhall Hall, Heaton Hall, Smithills Hall, Styal Mill, Buile Hill Mining Museum, Eccles Parish Church, All Saint Church Barton, Ordsall Hall, Cheethams Library and School, Manchester Police Museum, Swinton Civic Centre and The Lowry where we spent most of the afternoon outside because of a fire alarm. We have also had local walks to places of interest including walks around Barton, Little Woolden Hall prehistoric settlement, Worsley Village Lime Pit, the Delph Canal Basin and Roe Green Village.

In the past, members have, occasionally, put on exhibitions of their findings in Eccles Library, the most memorable being by Bert and Sadie Blunt in 1988, who has researched the Saltair Brook, which is now covered over by the Trafford Centre. This exhibition was also shown in several schools in Eccles.

Books researched and published by the group are:
1) ‘Church Street Eccles’ by Helen Wickham, including contributions by group members
2) ‘A Walk Around Barton’ by Doreen and Eddie Rowbottam.
3) ‘Industrial History of Eccles’ by Ronald Britton.
4) ‘A Chronological History of Eccles’ by Doreen Rowbottom.
5) ‘Treasures of Eccles Past and Present’ By Doreen Rowbottom.
6) Don Lingard, a member, is hoping to publish his research on Pendleton in 2004.

We meet at 2pm on alternate Wednesdays at Eccles Gateway (Eccles Library).
