Healthy Communities Collaborative
Have you had a fall?
'Every year over 1500 people aged over 65 years are killed by an accidental fall in the home. This equates to an older person dying every 5 hours as a result of a fall'.

80%of deaths from accidents are in the over 65 age group.

40% of care home admissions are as a result of a fall.

Three areas have been selected to pilot this project. Teams of residents living and/or working in Little Hulton, Higher and Lower Broughton and Little Hulton have been established and meet regularly to set up small projects which help individuals to take small steps to reduce the risk of falling.

* Ensure you have good lighting in your home and turn a light on if you have to get up in the night.

* Ensure you have your eyes tested regularly and clean your glasses daily.

* Take regular exercise such as join a Healthy Hips and Hearts group (there are now 50 across the City). Take up Tai Chi or join one of the many health walks. For further information contact your local Health Improvement Team.

* Wear the right type of footwear - sensible, well fitting shoes are not only comfortable, but will help to reduce falls. Wear slippers with a non-slip sole NOT SLOPPY SLIPPERS.

* See your G.P. and ask him if he can review your medication, particularly if you take more than four medication a day.
