SALFORD & CLERMONT- FERRAND
The city’s twinning alliance with Clermont-Ferrand, capital of the Auvergne region in France, was created in May 1966. Salford has enjoyed an excellent relationship with its French counterpart over the last four decades - strengthened by exchange visits allowing young people to sample the respective cultures of each city.

2005 started with a meeting between Gerard Quenot and Cllr.John Warmisham, Chair of the Clermont-Ferrand Town Twinning Association to look at planning events for various exchange visits and to strengthen ties.

There has been a successful chess tournament in Salford at which Clermont-Ferrand sent a number of players.
Stella Peterson and Jim Gosney attended an assessing local energy policies conference in Clermont-Ferrand. (Annual Meeting April 7th & 8th 2005)

Most significantly City 2000, a youth group involved in intergeneration work went out to Clermont-Ferrand to see how young French people were involved with the same kind of work.
They were delighted to be joined on their trip by the former Mayor and Mayoress of Salford Cllr.Stan and Linda Witkowski.Despite language barriers, the young people were able to share both similarities and differences about their cultures they met young people from the city and discussed the issue of youth forums. The group were even interviewed by a French newspaper as well as being media stars on French television!

Also Salford celebrated its 40 year relationship in style with French sister city, Clermont-Ferrand with various events. Salford City Council plans to strengthen the link with its twin city and is actively helping support the Marketing team at Clermont-Ferrand Airport with a view to the idea of a future introduction (maybe in the future) of a direct flight link between Manchester and Clermont-Ferrand.
