A selection of poems by Joan Dawson

This poem was inspired from watching the news about the devastation some storms had coursed over the country. So glad to be home, dry and warm.
Angry Storm
The moody black clouds roll swiftly along the angry grey skies
Threatening and warning all things to beware
Thunder roars loudly like a lions victorious cries
Lightning strikes blindly without any care
Rain lashes heavily with revenge and without remorse
Cars drive unseeingly through sweeping spray
Ranting and raving pouring with sheer force
Soaking obstacles that unluckily get in the way
Rivers swell and overflow giving birth to a flood
Trees with their branches and leaves swaying like drunken dancers
Fields and gardens are slowly swallowed into a grave of mud
People run quickly to shelter and where it’s safe dry and warm
To pacify and quieten the storms mood there are no answers
It will vent its rage till the anger subsides and it feels calm

Sitting in the garden on one of England's rare hot summer days, looking up at the sky and listening to natures sounds gave me the inspiration to write this poem.
Summers day
Bleached white shapes and swirls against a vivid blue background
As still and content as an undisturbed sleeping child
A dazzling orange glow blazes like a furnace through the blue sheet
Its rays giving warmth and brightness to all of earths tenants
Natures children open up their arms soaking up its milk of life
Birds sing and greet a morning cheer spreading their wings
Ready to fly and gather food for their hungry young babes
Bees buzz in excitement through a jigsaw of endless colours
Collecting honey for their queen from the awakening flowers
Streams ripple in delight as the sunbeams dance upon them
People smile with joy soaking in its welcoming brightness
The grass wears her best green robe in honoured greeting
To this glorious summers day

I recently lost some of my close family, so when an acquaintance of mine lost a close friend, it inspired me to write this poem, hoping to give comfort.
A Loss
When someone we love loses their fight
To the enemy we cannot defeat
A flame flickers out a bulb fades there is no light
If only once more we could meet
The pain in your heart and soul is too hard to bear
Mornings and evenings you cannot face
So many things and moments you did have and share
The world is such an empty place
But memories are like a piece of precious gold
Keep it close with you each day
Good times and special moments are yours to hold
Gold will not fade it is with you to stay
Relight the flame switch on the light and ease the pain
The one you lost was a borrowed gift
So let in the bright sun shine do not stand out in the rain
Yesterday has gone and cannot be relived
Tomorrow you cannot plan because it is not yet here
That special gift was your treasure
Today is now and you are here so wipe away that sad wet tear
That piece of gold is yours forever
