WHAT I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS

The happy smiles, the shiny eyes all suffused with hope,
Is it the little children? No, it’s me you silly dope!
A 28-inch TV with ‘Dolby Surround Sound’ would be the best,
But on the other hand, two new knees and a thermal vest.

I crave a new car, maybe a brand new jeep.
But with my failing eyesight, it could end in a heap!
So, perhaps I’d better lower my sights and settle for a stocking
Not filled with toys and fancy bits,
Just something to support my hips,

SO I CAN KEEP ON ROCKIN’!

In Anticipation of Spike’s Snowy Adventure

Spike stood in the doorway, gazing down the garden with wonder and awe. He’d heard about it, seen pictures, but never really expected to see it! He was born and brought up in Barbados and had only come to live in England a few months before. Obviously used to all the heat and sunshine, it had been a bit of a shock to arrive to chilly autumn weather. Though there had been compensations – long brisk walks through the country lanes with his family, rustling through the crispy fallen leaves. Even the rain didn’t seem so bad, as when it did rain in Barbados, it was usually torrential. There had been the odd coastal hurricane to contend with as well, when everything had to be battened down so it didn’t get ripped away.
The hair on his head stood up with the anticipation of going out and playing in all that glorious white stuff. When you’re seven and it’s the first time you’ve seen snow, it’s a mixture of apprehension and excitement. Would it be as cold as it looked? Will I sink into it? Everything was so silent, as well, outside and in the house. The rest of the family were still asleep and Spike was wishing they’d all wake up so he could go out and play. He crept upstairs again and listened outside the bedroom doors for any movement. All he heard was contented snores, and a few gurgles and chortles from the newest member of the family. No good waking her up – she couldn’t walk yet, so she’d be no use to play with!
“Oh, well! I’ll have to take the risk of being shouted at. I just can’t wait any longer!” So, with a spring and a bark, Spike launched himself onto the bed to wake up his family with joyous licks and woofs. Well, apart from anything else, he’d never remember where that bone was buried if he didn’t start digging for it soon!
