50 years of Twinning between Narbonne and Salford
The first twinning visit between Eccles and the town of Narbonne took place in 1957 and to celebrate the 50th anniversary a party of 20 Councillors, Twinning Committee members and business people, including wine, honey and olive oil producers from the Narbonne area were invited to visit Salford in June 2007.

The visit was aimed at strengthening our links and making sure that they will serve both cites well for the next fifty years. A busy programme of visits, including a civic reception in the Civic Centre, the Lowry and Salford Quays, Salford City Academy, the MUFC Old Trafford tour and business meetings between the two twinning committees were mixed in with cultural and social events over the four day visit.

Salford marked the occasion by creating a Narbonne Garden on Southway in the Eccles precinct and this was officially opened by the Mayor, Councillor Val Burgoyne and the Deputy Mayor of Narbonne. A weekend of music and other entertainment accompanied a French Market, featuring the produce of the Narbonne area in the precinct.

The weather was not particularly kind to us or our French visitors but at the end of the visit we knew that our common heritage based on commerce, canals, culture and sport will continue to keep the links alive, hopefully for the next 50 years.

Here is a slideshow of some highlights from the visit. The show will open in a new window, just close it to return to this page.
