Welcome to the first newsletter of the New Year. I think by now we are all glad to see the back of the snow & ice blighting our roads and pavements. Like us, you have probably noticed the increase in the number of pot holes in the roads due to the frozen tarmac breaking up. Below are lists of useful numbers to report various issues that may affect you or your environment. Please be aware that to warrant immediate call out for pot holes, they must be greater than 50mm (2 inches) deep in the road and 25mm (1 inch) deep in the pavement.

Dementia
A new resource centre opens its doors for the first time for people affected by dementia in the heart of Swinton.
The centre brings together a range of services to support people with dementia and their carers, including a
specialist information centre, a day centre, telecare demonstration room and a community mental health team. There are two gardens with safety flooring, as well as a café where people can relax. Local people are already volunteering at the centre – in the café and as ‘meeters and greeters’. The development has been made possible by a large capital grant by Booth charities and has been supported by Professor Ray Tallis, philosopher, poet, novelist and cultural critic. The Humphrey Booth Resource Centre is at 16 – 18 Worsley Rd, Swinton, M27 5WW. Telephone 0161 607 7100. For more information visit www.salford.gov.uk/dementia

The Worsley area was hardest hit with seven cars being broke into. Contents taken included sat navs, laptops, number plates, tool bag, wallet & leather jacket.

Rogue Trader Warning
December - 1 male and 1 female attended an address in Swinton reporting they are from Virgin/BT. They asked to use the toilet. Female was wearing some form of ID. The informant has called Virgin who stated they have no representatives in the area. No entry was gained to the address. White male tall slim dark short shaved hair, wearing black clothes. White female, short, slim, round face, blonde hair, wearing black clothes
January - Offender attends address in Swinton stating he is the son of the builder who carried out work on the premises in December. Offender states that the neighbour has reported a leak from the chimney. He states that to fix it he requires £80 cash. The victim hands over the cash and the offender makes off from the address. White male, approx 5’4’’ tall, stocky build, about 30yrs, Irish accent, very round face, short or shaved light coloured hair. Using a silver car.
January - 2 unknown offenders approach occupant and make comments that slates on the roof need repairing. Without permission the offenders use ladders to climb on the roof and according to the occupant, were not up there long enough to do any repairs. The males have then asked the occupant for £175, this was declined. Offenders then asked for £10, occupant then asks them to leave. Two white males with ginger hair. One mid 40’s, 5’8” tall, ginger hair, local accent, wearing a dark blue jacket, blue jeans, slim build. Made off in a small white van with ladders and writing on the side.
January - The city council is urging residents not to give their personal details or bank details over the phone after reports of hoax phone calls. Fraudsters posing as officers from the government or the city council's tax department are contacting residents to tell them their council tax band has changed. The caller is then asking for bank account details to process the refund. Similar scams are understood to have been operating across the region and other parts of the country. A Salford City Councillor said: "This is a scam and we're asking residents to be on their guard. The calls are not being made by our council tax team and I'd like to remind residents not to give their personal information or bank details to anyone over the phone unless they are certain who the caller is.” Residents who think they may have given their bank account details to a hoax caller should contact their bank for advice.
Doorstep criminals may pretend to be from the gas board, water board, local council or even a nurse or carer. Remember, lock your front and back doors, when you hear a knock at the door think, are you expecting anyone? If not you don’t have to answer the door. If you want to answer the door put your chain on before doing so or look through your window. If the caller claims to be an official ask for their Identity card, take the card from them and close the door while you check it. Use the telephone numbers of your own utility providers to make the check; don’t use the telephone number on the card! If you are suspicious, ring the police without returning to the door. If you are approached by someone offering to carry out property repairs always tell them that you have your own people to deal with such things, don’t employ anyone on the doorstep.
