The Buff & the Lucozade Factory
The BUFF- The Saturday Evening Sports Paper that gave all the racing results was the BUFF (it was buff colour not white like the usual newspapers). It was dropped off from Bolton at Little Hulton Station.

When my husband Donald was a lad, he used to collect the Buff from the station and go round Little Hulton on his bike delivering it. He carried a small bell, which I still have, (see picture on left) to announce his arrival. People would come out of their houses and collect the Buff from him. When he got to the age of 14 he started full-time work with the Water Board.

Years later our son would deliver the Buff-not on a bike though. My husband would take him round in the car.

LUCOZADE FACTORY

I worked at the Lucozade Factory in 1969.

My job was to clean the recycled bottles. In those days if you returned a bottle to the place where you bought it (either a pub or a paper shop), you would get 2p for each bottle.

It was someone’s job to go round collecting all the bottles from the pubs and then return them to the factory. In the winter the bottles would be freezing cold and wet. It was not a very nice job and I’m sure it is why I have arthritis in my hands now!
