May 2009 : Cathy Farnworth writes ~ On the Little Hulton website we have seen the very interesting pictures of Madam's Wood and also the Redgrave sisters.
I am the great granddaughter of Effie (Euphemia) Redgrave - mother to football commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme (They think its all over ...) and would very much like to have a date on this picture. We know that Effie lived with her family on Hill Top in 1901 which is very close - and that in 1923 Annie Redgrave was living in Madams Wood Cottage.
It seems to me that the picture must show other Redgraves unless it is very early indeed, or that it could show William R children (John was killed in WW1). Can you shed any light on this matter - is Sam Hamer still around and able to tell us the names of the Redgraves in the picture? And the date?
If you have any pictures of Hill Top at the time that would be super too.
BTW if there was a slaughterhouse nearby please let me know that too. We know that Effie went daily to drink blood (!) as she was anaemic! She hated it! Effie died in 1978 at the age of 97 so we have a lot of memories focusing on her. Best regards Cathy

Jan 2009 : Ian Baeckelandt writes from Melton Mowbray : I hope you won’t mind me writing to you, but I am trying to get information about Walter Greenwood. I was deeply moved after reading Love on the Dole. I then went on to read; how the other Man Lives, Down by the sea and am now reading His worship the Mayor. I was surprised that the latter was again taken around Hanky Park, and I would like to find out what other (if any) books of his continue with this theme. I live in Melton Mowbray, and don’t know Salford at all, so was trying to find someone that would know about this, and would perhaps like to have a chat. Purely in a casual and amateur way. I have found the Salford Library Resources page, and have got your address from the Salford Local History Society page. I would appreciate any help that you could give me with this. Thank you. Ian may be contacted via email ribbis@hotmail.co.uk

Jan 2009 : Valerie Jordan (nee Roberts) writes from Harrogate : I was born in Little Hulton in 1960 and lived there until I was 21.(1981) I always remember working at the newsagents on Kenyon Way I think the owner was called John West. I started delivering papers for him when I was about 10 and then when I was 14/15 I worked in the shop at weekends and during school holidays. I recall the jars of sweets and the penny sweets we used to sell to the kids.
I now live in Harrogate and own a newsagents selling old fashioned sweets in jars and we are the most popular shop in the area for our lucky bags.
I attended Little Hulton Primary school, where the Headteacher was called Mrs Wood. She was very strict I remember we all had to kneel in the hall in the mornings and she used to check that our skirts touched the floor and we had to wave a hankerchief. In Junior School Mr Maycraft was my favourite. He used to take us walking up Belmont at weekends. He gave me a weeping willow cutting which I planted in our back garden and it grew enormously. I always remembered him when I saw it years later.

July 2008 : Tudi Nutley writes from Ontario, Canada : Hello Maggie ... I have just found my Lansdale family in the 1861 census farming on Old Lane in Little Hulton (Little Haughton). Robert Lansdale born July 9, 1827 in Clifton, Eccles, Lancashire, England is my Gr.Gr.Gr. Grandfather. He is enumerated with his wife Sarah (I believe her maiden name was Gilbody), son Thomas (9yrs old) and daughter Ann (6 months old). Horace E. Lansdale, another son was born in 1863, perhaps in Little Hulton?
Also enumerated as living with my family is Miss Mary Ellen Whelow? 21 yrs old and James Pengton? 45 yrs old. Miss Clara E. Ashton, 30 yrs old, is shown as visiting.
.
In the Gazette Issue 20677 published on the 28 November 1846. Page 188 & 189 it is stated the railway was to be built into a field occupied by Robert Lansdale of Little Hulton. Exerpt below ...
I was wondering, since I'm in Pickering, Ontario, Canada if you could confirm my Little Houghton (as spelt in the 1861 census) is your Little Hulton and perhaps you could send me a map as I cannot find one ... and any other interesting tidbits you may come across regarding my family in Hulton!
Oh before I close this email, I find it very interesting to see a town of Walkdon nearby as I often wonder why people move from one country to another and how they end up choosing where. My Gr.Gr. Grandfather Thomas Lansdale (shown above in the 1861 Census) came to Canada knowing he was heading for Walkerton in 1881! Before he left England Thomas married Ester E. Jackson. Their children: Florence E. Lansdale born 1876, Ernest Robert (my Gr. Grandfather) born 1877 and William born 1879.
MAGGIE'S REPLY : Lovely to hear from you Tudi ... I actually work for ICT so I'm sorry but I can't help with local history .... but think you may get some results from our local history department

Dear Maggie,
By chance I was researching famous people from Salford on the website to prove a point to my boss that Alistair Cooke was indeed born in Salford, as was I back 1956, in fact it was the 29th Feb 1956 to be exact. My mother always tells me I was the first leap year baby born that year just after midnight and apparently this was reported in the paper at the time. At the age of 4 we moved to a brand new house in Little Hulton, 109 Captain Fold Road to be precise where my earliest memories stem from. My Mother still lives in Little Hulton on Old lane but is a bit fragile at the age of 81 and keep me in touch with what’s happening. My Mother used to work behind the bar there in the 70’s so I am sure she will know the names of the people from the Kenyon Arms picture.
As an absolute fluke I also found the “Memories of Little Hulton” and was gob smacked to see an entry from one Margaret Walker – Celodin. She refers to herself as the little girl in the photo of the Labour Club outing in 1965. This really struck a cord with me as I used to have an old flame called Margaret Walker who lived down Kenyon Way. I joined the Navy in 1970 and essentially left LH thereafter.
