Can You Help ??
|
(May 2007) : Janet Patterson writes ~ I wonder if anyone could help me?
I was told that my Great Grandfather Joseph Wolstencroft was a mine manager in the Little Hulton area, and was living at Highgate House, Little Hulton in 1920.
I can find no record of Highgate House (apart from on my Grandmother's wedding invitations), nor do I know which mine he was at.
I would love to find out

(20 May 2006) : Joan & Bill Walsh write from Birmingham
Dear Maggie, We are Joan & Bill Walsh from Birmingham and are researching Joan's ancestry on her father's side. Starting with her grandmother who's maiden name was Haslam born in Hollinwood. Her great grandfather's through to her great great grandfather's family were all born in Little Hulton.
We were so pleased to find your website, very interesting & informative, also to the best of your knowledge are there any Haslam's still in the area?. Do you know if there were any local brickworks? as a number of the male Haslam's were bricklayer's or bricksetter's.
Any information you could let us have would be most appreciated.

(April 2006) : Leigh-Anne Stewart writes : Hi I'm wondering if anyone can help me. My great great grandfather lived and his parents worked in a pub called the Jolly Carter which was at 251 Manchester road in Little Hulton. When i've tried to trace this its now an Indian restaurant. Does anyone remember a pub around this place it would mean a lot if i could track it down
The people in question are a William and Mary (nee Dunn) Darlington. William was born in 1852 in Smithfold Lane, Little Hulton to a John Booth (stonemason reported to have worked on the Walkden monument but i haven't proved this yet) and Nancy Darlington. As his parents only married the year after he was born he was given the name Darlington on official records but from census information went as William Booth up until his marriage to Mary.
In 1881 they lived at 93 Bridgewater street but in the 1891 and 1901 census's they were living at 251 Manchester road which was known as the Jolly Carter. In modern records 251 Manchester road is an Indian restaurant so I'm assuming the pub would have been demolished or possibly renovated and was just wondering if anyone could help me trace anything about this place.
The children i found for the couple are James. John R, William, Ellen Mary (or possibly May), Jane and Ernest and several of them were born at this address with their father giving his profession as Collier/ Bar Keep/Beer Seller.
The family lived in Little Hulton from mid 1700's (the earliest i've managed to trace so far) till the early 1900's when my great grandfather left to raise a family in Fleetwood. As far as i know his brothers and sisters stayed there. The surnames i have connected with this family are Darlington, Booth, Entwisle, Dunn, Partington and Tudge so if anyone can help me in anyway i'd love to hear from them
