The name "SEFA" is an acronym derived from the intitials 'S'elected 'E'levated 'F'low 'A'pparatus.
Developed by British Coal Mines Rescue Service and Sabre Safety of Aldershot.
Introduced at Boothstown in 1987 and replaced the Proto and Aerorlox Apparatus.
Its unique modular construction facilitated future development of individual components.
Specification was well inside British Standard requirements on inspired air temperature and breathing resistance.
Self-contained, re-generative unit worn wholly on the back by means of a rucksack type frame.
Comfortable to wear and easy to maintain after use.
The apparatus could be stored ready for immediate use.
Total weight - about 16kgs (33lbs), fully charged.
Duration - 2 hours plus 30 minutes minimum reserve.
Permitted for use underwater.
Manufactured by Messrs Sabre Safety of Aldershot.
