First published in 1959 the updated editon includes illustrations and "further reading". Frank Mullineux's book is still regarded as essential reading for anyone interested in the subject.
It tells the fascinating story of how the Duke together with his agent John Gilbert and the engineer James Brindley succeeded in creating England's first major canal enterprise. Here indeed was the beginning of the great transport revolution of the 18th century.
A clear, concise account complete with anecdotes and colourful examples. A must for the student and the casual reader alike.

THE DEMISE OF SEVERAL CENTURIES OF BASKET MAKING IN THE LOWER IRWELL VALLEY by JOHN B.SMETHURST
A fascinating account of a once-thriving local cottage industry that dated back to the Middle Ages. Low lying land alongside rivers and streams was suitable for the cultivation of osiers(willows) used in basket making.
This well-researched study includes maps, photographs and a list of basket, skip and hamper makers(mostly from census returns) and the family tree of the Rogerson family, showing marriages between families of basket makers and farmers in the area.
