Hello Maggie, Just a short note to say it was lovely looking at old photo's of Eccles the place where I was born. 26 Buxton Street this was on the opposite side to the park. There were several shops on Barton Road - Bradley's and I think Brown's was another, Scotts for sweets and wards for cakes - plus many others. And I am old enough to remember the gas lamps and the change over to electric. Back to back house, very little money but did us kids have fun.

My school was St. Mary's - and somewhere in the local papers is a photo of when our school team won the relay race - Bernadette Kerwin, my cousin Pat Jackson, Patsy Burns and myself Anne Wilkinson - I was the youngest at the age of 12. Then went to All Saints and photo's in local paper when winning the netball sheild, and medal for running. Yes the memories certainly came flooding back - now I could not run 10 yards if you paid me.

I left Eccles at the age of 12 moving to Peel-Green, then Winton. As you can see now living in Scotland. Not been back to the area since 1990 but the change was so sad - give me the old Eccles anyday - precincts, flats, it all looks so grubby it is a crying shame - alas times do not always change for the better.

The picture post card is how I wish to remember Eccles, the closeness of the people, the town hall dances, and the open air market with it's bustle of people. The Good Old Days so to speak. Thanks for the pleasure of the memories on your site. Anne Francis

29 July 2007 : Maggie Hill writes ~ Dear Maggie, I was wondering if you have any pictures of Shakespere Crescent in your history archives, as I am interested in what the street looked like back in the year 1900.

Maggie's reply ~ Thank you for your email regarding Shakespere Crescent. I'm including a link for our Local History page at Salford City Council ~ which holds a huge collection of photographs, documents and newspapers relating to Salford’s past, and I feel sure you will find something there.

21 July 2007 : Fran Bottoms writes ~ Dear Maggie, I was just browsing your website and came across the centenary of Eccles Library. my Mother always told me that her father was very involved in getting the library established.

His name was Samuel Wilson and he was a local councillor. I wondered whether there are records about him or if anyone has any further information about him please

19 June 2007 : Anne Armstrong writes ~ Dear Maggie, I was interested to see you are collating memories of Eccles, where my grandmother's family lived for generations.

I've recently discovered that my great grandfather, James Irlam, was elected to the infant Eccles Borough Council (the Local Board) in 1899.
I am currently trying to find out more about his life and times, political persuasion, etc. He was a building contractor, so I think it's likely that he was responsible for the building of Irlam Avenue, just off Trafford Road, where the Irlam family lived.

I would be fascinated to learn more from local sources.
