ECCLES LIBRARY

LEFT: Eccles Library in 2006. The 1970s extension to the left has been demolished to make way for the new LIFT centre. The LIFT centre will bring together library, council and NHS services in a new building that will incorporate the original 1907 Eccles Library.

RIGHT: Eccles Library and Cenotaph in the early twentieth century.
Eccles Library was opened in 1907. The building was paid for by multi-millionaire steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, who offered funds for the building of many hundreds of libraries and educational establishments around the world.
Locally it is still known as the 'Carnegie Library'.
To the right can be seen the row of shops that belonged to Eccles Co-operative Society. These were built in the early part of the 20th century and demolished in the 1950s to make way for the Co-op's Centenary House.
An Aldi supermarket now occupies the site.
